Southeastern Concert Ensemble Percussion Auditions

wshall

Hello, all!

If you have navigated to this part of my website, it is because you are interested in auditioning for the Wind Symphony at Southeastern Louisiana University. Below is the audition material you will need for the audition.

The auditions for the Spring 2015 semester are slated to take place on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 from 10am-noon. We will meet in the Band Room, A162, at 10am.

PLEASE NOTE: You are responsible for performing the excerpts at the correct tempos. Regardless if you play everything in the excerpts rhythmically and dymically accurate, you will be penalized should you not perform them at the correct tempos.

Principal positions in the Wind Symphony will be determined after the auditions and after consultation with Dr. Hemberger.
Principals for other ensembles will be determined by those directors or by top score.
Numbers for each ensemble will be strictly enforced. Please make alternate plans should you need an additional ensemble for scholarship.

ALL PERCUSSION MAJORS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE AN AUDITION FOR THE SPRING 2016 SEMESTER AND WILL BE EXPECTED TO PERFORM IN AT LEAST ONE CONCERT ENSEMBLE!!!
EVEN IF YOU DON’T PLAN ON BEING IN WIND SYMPHONY, YOU STILL NEED TO AUDITION. WE WILL ALWAYS BEGIN AND END OUR SEMESTER WITH AN EVALUATION.
SHOULD A PRINCIPAL TIMPANI SPOT BE AVAILABLE, IT WILL BE GIVEN TO THE HIGHEST TIMPANI SCORE. A TIE-BREAKER WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE OVERALL PERCUSSION SCORE.

ALL AUDITIONEES WILL BE EXPECTED TO PERFORM ALL PIECES.

PLEASE OBSERVE THE PARENTHESIS AND MARKINGS.

QUESTION: Q, you didn’t give us much time to prepare.
ANSWER: You’re lucky you get this much time! In the real world, you can get anywhere from one day to a few days to a week or at the most two weeks to prepare more music than what I gave you.So, quit your crying and get to work. Download the music now and go practice. Much love!

Audition Material

[warning]There will be a five (5) point deduction on your overall score for every five (5) clicks you are off of the original tempo marking. For example, if the audition piece is marked quarter note=120 and you play quarter note=110, you will be deducted 10 points overall. The same goes the other way. If the tempo marking is 80 and you play 100, you will be deducted 20 overall points. Now, at the same time, if it is marked 120 and you play 118, no deduction will happen. [/warning]

  • Snare Drum – Kije Excerpt: You must research this to get the correct tempo.
  • Magic Flute – Bells: You must research this to get the correct tempo.
  • Disney’s Newsies – multi
    • You must research this in order to get the correct tempo
    • This requires multiple instruments. Plan your setup accordingly.
    • Play only the parts in brackets. In the audition, you will jump from each bracketed section to the next. You may pause a bit to get ready for the next segment.
  • Timpani S2016: Tempo as marked.

THAT IS IT…GOOD LUCK!!!

Audition Results Spring 2016:

This is how the studio is ranked at the beginning of the semester. It is my belief that anyone can beat anyone on any given day. Of course, this is dependent on your discipline and preparation. Have a great semester and we may do a mock audition to see how the rankings flesh out mid-semester.
